Over the rainbow
Jimmy Scott
Over the Rainbow (Milestone
MCD 9314-2) Jimmy Scott's follow up to Mood
Indigo
continues to explore the "American
Song Book" from "Pennies from Heaven" ,"Just
Friends" to "Strange Fruit" in
a style that is totally individual, yet without being personal.
Cabaret is part of it, but soul with its fragile sensibilities
is most of this music.
What Scott does, and has been doing
for some 50 years,
is all about probing a song--its lyrics--and places within a song
few musicians
have visited. Ever.
The supporting cast is just fine--providing
the colors and frames for his art:
David "Fathead" Newman (saxophone),
George Mraz(bass), Joe Beck (guitar), Grady
Tate (drums),
Larry Willis (piano), Bob Kindred (saxophone), Robert Sadin,
Clarence Penn, Gregoire Maret (harmonica), Joe Locke (vibes),
Michael Kanan (piano), Justin Robinson (saxophone).
