Independent: Fangs was released earlier this year by the Seattle-based Jazz Project.

The Northwest has long been a creative alcove where ideas spin--like Chicago, Austin, Detroit, Minneapolis. Memphis, New Orleans.

The musicians who are Fangs are in that kind of creative pocket. Talented people playing great music, and distributing it on their own.

Fangs is a group anchored to the classic Hammond B3 sound. The musicians are veteran players. Musicians in that creative alcove. Tenor saxophonists Hadley Caliman (Freddie Hubbard, Carlos Santana. Jon Hendricks) and Gary Hammond (Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Don Patterson). Guitarist Nicholas Hoffman, a player whose previous CD's have featured Dave Mathews and Joey DeFrancesco. The gifted organist Delvon Dumas and the solid, talented drummer Jud Sherwood--Jazz Project director.

Although Fangs is probably not in a store near you-- music from independents rarely is--this is music worth checking out. Fortunately, the web lets one reach the alcoves.
